Thanks to everyone for the helpful comments. I followed the suggestions to install Foxit, and the one for the Firefox extension.
Uninstalling Adobe Reader was apparently easy enough, but it did not remove a number of registry entries. I used a registry cleanup tool to find them (did I get them all I wonder?).
The computer has not yet become unresponsive, except for MS Word, which takes an age to save or open if there are any network drives mapped. Yes, I know, MS say I should unmap network drives to overcome this, but WTF? Only M$ Office queries the network for minutes between every menu click changing directories if any mapped drive is disconnected. Open Office doesn't do this, so I only use MS Word if cornered and forced to, and the other computers don't even have it installed (far too expensive).
