Nov. 7th, 2007 05:53 pmI'm not sure about this, it seems to me to have the embedded assumption that if you don't want large corporations bossing you around, you want a government to do so instead.

Date: 2007-11-07 06:35 pm (UTC)"It should be legal for two consenting adults to challenge each other to a duel and fight a Death Match." I like this one. I vote yes, but only so long as light sabres are involved. And the participants dress like chickens.
"I should be able to sell my vote for cash if I feel like it."
Time honoured tradition in the days of open voting. In fact, this was one of the main arguments against the secret ballot. And actually, there's a reasonable argument for making people accountable for the way they vote - or would be, if the current system were being abused, which I don't think it is. But yeah, it is possible to have a workable system that rests on the sale of votes.
And - what? Identifying presidential candidates? Pfft! I wouldn't be able to identify British MPs!
Yay! I'm a socialist! Pretty accurate result.

Date: 2007-11-07 08:01 pm (UTC)Actual socialism, as distinct from a number of socialist ideas I believe in, is not for me - like the ents, nobody is entirely on my side - but socialists as we have in the UK gov are more hostile to people like me, and small companies, than the other lot. I would be hopeless at being an employee of a large corporation, so they scare me more than the rest. Of course, if the others wanted to do extreme things like abolish the NHS that would worry me even more.
From Aesop's fables, I want the equivalent of King Log most of the time, what we get is King Stork.
It seems to me that a government can get away with doing more damage to an institution that it is traditionally thought to support - hence the activities of the National Institute for Culling the Elderly denying the more effective (but costly) treatment for patients with macular degeneration, alzheimers and so on (except in Scotland, of course).

You can tell it's an American meme though - they cannot even comprehend the existence of communists.
