Geek alert! I spent the day at a power supply design seminar given by National Semiconductors in a lecture hall at the University of Warwick in Coventry. A month ago was the Texas Instruments / Unitrode power supply design seminar, which has for a long time been regarded as the definitive (1 to 2 yearly) training day in the subject. However, I was very impressed with the new stuff Nat Semi they taught me today. As it turns out I have to design something using a Nat Semi power chip in the next few days, so it couldn't have been better timed.

When I were young, designing the power supply was a job given to the newbie, while the experienced engineers designed the clever stuff. Now power supply design is a specialist subject that makes some other electronics designers' eyes glaze over. No, honestly, it is because it is complex, not that they sense a geek beside whom other geeks look almost normal.

You will have passed within a short distance of my office (although not that short, since I expect you were on main campus, not the Gibbet Hill site :)
