Disappearing into the eleventh dimension

I dropped a rechargeable AA cell on the floor - one of a set of four I was removing from a camera to recharge. I know within a radius of a few inches where it fell, so expected to find it easily.

NO chance! I have picked up and moved anything on the floor within 4 feet of where it fell. It is not anywhere to be seen. Hibernia, who can often spot things I can't see, could not see it either. I have spent far more time on it than it is worth, simply because I can't believe that it is impossible to find.

Luckily I have a spare set of batteries, but I would still like to know what happened to it, because this appears so illogical.

I am part way through re-reading Accelerando, which I downloaded as an e-book. It is science fiction, starting in the near future, but beyond that, no spoilers.
