I spotted this while mousing around following links from another LJ user. The story as stated is appalling, and all too believable. Unwanted popups can land you in gaol (you need to scroll down to read the story).

It is difficult to be quite sure about the accuracy of stories on the net, but it seems to me to make sense.

While this is a US based story (which I completely believe, although I suspect it's likely it will get sorted out) similar things can and do happen here, although I suspect it wouldn't go as far here - I don't know the strength or set up of US teaching unions but here they are pretty on the ball, and just about every teacher is a member of one or more.

However, in much more general terms, I'm becoming increasingly glad that I did not manage to make it into the teaching profession, because every which way you turn, there are a myriad of things that can go wrong for the individual teacher, to a ridiculous extent and support (in every sense of the word) from SMTs can be woefully inadequate.

I read this story, on a reputable news site, so I can believe it's true. All the poor teacher was guilty of was not knowing her way around a computer - obviously a heinous offence these days! On the other hand, the school authorities, who were negligent in updating the (very necessary) online protection for their pupils, seem to be getting off scot free.
